2024 Winners

Each year, the Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Chamber of Commerce celebrates local individuals, organizations, and businesses that make a lasting impact on our community. The 2024 recipients demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and dedication, especially in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Below are the winners, organized by award category.

Business of the Year

PalletOne

PalletOne of Hazlehurst cares for their employees, customers, and our community. For years, they have been a centerpiece in the industrial economy of Hazlehurst. They have also helped to sponsor nearly every type of community event you can think of, from most recently serving as a sponsor for the Three Rivers Arts Festival to so many more, but what made them earn the Business of the Year for 2024 was how they looked after their employees. After Helene, leadership at this business worked with others involved in the company and the Jeff Davis County Community Foundation to create a fund to help their staff. They did not seek donations from our community, but instead received funds from others. Every non-management employee at this business received funds to help them recover after Hurricane Helene—nothing embodies the spirit of the Business of the Year Award more. Under the leadership of Bo Reese, Eric Bagley, and Ryan Miller, PalletOne has shown that they not only care for their business but also for their customers and our community.

Claude P. Cook Entrepreneur of the Year

Mulliganz Golf Club Team

What happens when it’s not an individual, but a team tackling the wild idea? The 2024 winner is a team that said, “We will take on the challenge.” Joel Poe, Leigh Poe, and John Turner of Mulliganz Golf Club presented this bold vision to give the local golf course one more chance. Where the City and County had previously failed due to years of neglect and limited budgets, this team brought it back to life. From property acquisition to course revitalization and even hosting a successful hospital fundraiser, they exemplify entrepreneurial grit and community passion.

“For four years, our local governments have tried to save the golf course for our community, but were unable to do it. In less than a year… the Mulliganz team accomplished what government was unable to do in over 10 years.” – Oakley G. Perry

Agribusiness of the Year

Morris Forestry

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Morris Forestry Services didn’t wait to be called—they went to work. Led by John Morris, the team used their resources to help rebuild the community by clearing roads, removing trees, and restoring order. Their quick action helped ensure emergency services could access critical areas and neighbors could begin recovering safely.

“The morning after the Hurricane, [John Morris] and his team cleared miles of highway.” – Ivey Grace Churchwell

Outstanding Woman of the Year

Kristi Williams

Kristi Williams has been a staple of Jeff Davis Hospital for years. Serving as a nurse and working her way up to become Chief Operating Officer of the hospital, she has dedicated her time and energy to serving others when they are most vulnerable. She did all of this while raising a beautiful family with her husband Ken, supporting her husband through an election campaign and being his cheerleader as he served as Chief of Police for Hazlehurst. Accomplished as a mother, wife, nurse, and businesswoman, Kristi represents the ideals of the Outstanding Woman of the Year award perfectly.

“She dedicates herself to her staff, and this community she leads with her heart. Her compassion drives her each day to make the world a better place. During Hurricane Hellene and the weeks after, she worked tirelessly to ensure anyone she came in contact with had the essentials they needed, often giving money out of her own pocket. When fellow co-workers are suffering, she cries with them, prays over them, and then boldly stands in the gap. I have seen her single-handedly organize fundraisers, forfeit family time to serve at Jeff Davis Hospital, whether as a nurse or passing out water. She leaves her home in the middle of the night when expecting mothers show up at our ER in need of care and cannot make it to another hospital that has OB services. During the snowstorm, she was sent home sick on Monday, but Tuesday she came in and slept at the hospital Tuesday night so she would be available if needed. She pours herself into others and is a guiding light to anyone who knows her.”

Administrative Professional of the Year

Media Music

Media Music has been the secretary for the Hazlehurst Church of God for several years. After Hurricane Helene, the Church went right to work, organizing meals for our community daily, giving away supplies, and so much more. Media was right there every step of the way to help organize the chaos and ensure that everything ran smoothly. For going above and beyond in 2024, the Chamber is happy to award Media Music as the Administrative Professional of the Year.

Non-Profit of the Year

Hazlehurst Church of God

Hazlehurst Church of God stepped up to serve those in need after Hurricane Helene more than nearly any other non-profit during the immediate aftermath of the storm. They received almost 450% more nominations than any other award nominee in any other category. For feeding thousands of people after Helene, helping emergency first responders, collecting supplies and even Christmas toys for those in need, and for reminding all of us that Jeff Davis County truly is “Good Ground,” we are pleased to celebrate Hazlehurst Church of God with Pastors Hugh and Bethany Anderson as the non-profit of the year.

“This church went above and beyond after Hurricane Helene hit our community. They prepared hot meals, found donations for food and essential supplies that our community desperately needed. They even provided gifts for children during Christmas to those who were in need.”

Citizen of the Year

Charles Wasdin

Very few people went above and beyond in 2024 as much as Charles Wasdin did. Wasdin loves Hazlehurst and Jeff Davis County. He is always one of the first ones to help with anything going on – to volunteer his people to serve others, to put their lives on the line to protect others. In his role, he wears two hats. The first has helped our city and county be more prepared when fires hit. He oversaw the merger of the City and County fire departments, championed better fire services for our community, leading to a lower Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating for Jeff Davis County, which in turn meant better home insurance rates for residents. The second role he serves in is as our director of the Emergency Management Agency. In this role, he helps our community prepare and overcome storms and disasters. During Hurricane Helene, this individual and his staff were trapped inside the Emergency Operations Center after a generator stopped. However, he and his team still found ways to help our community and guide resources. During the hours after the storm, his health took a toll, and he had to be taken to the hospital. For most, that would have stopped them in their tracks, but in no time, he was back in Hazlehurst leading the charge. Post storm, he held briefings to keep the entire community on the same page, provided updates on how recovery was going, coordinated FEMA and GEMA response in our community, worked to have mutual aid from other fire departments come to our community to assist with fires while our local fire department worked emergency operations, and continued to look for grants and funding to help our community during the long-term recovery process. Charles Wasdin went above and beyond for every single one of us to help keep us safe and bring our community back to something that resembled pre-Helene.Very few people went above and beyond in 2024 as much as Charles Wasdin did. Jane W. Baggett Lifetime Achievement Award

Bonnie Hullett

The Jane W. Baggett Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has spent a career or lifetime making our community better, and Bonnie Hullett embodies all of these things. Bonnie is no stranger to our local Chamber, serving for over 20 years with the Chamber of Commerce. She started working with the Chamber years ago as the office secretary. She later moved up to serve as Executive Director of the Chamber. During her tenure, she saw record growth of the Chamber, success of multiple events such as the Great Steak Cook Off, Big Cat Quest, Jeff Davis Farm City Day, and countless others. She positioned the Chamber as the premier business and community leader and advocate. Even at non-Chamber events, you could find Bonnie and her late husband, Oscar, helping out. For her unwavering support of the Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis County Chamber of Commerce, her years of service to our community, and her passion to make Jeff Davis County a better place for all of us, Bonnie Hullett has been awarded the highest honor our community bestows as the recipient of the 2024 Jane W.
